Wild Living Foods is perfect for Downtown Los Angeles, and vice versa. The small space on Main and 8th houses an intriguing combination of vegan inventions and excellent people watching. Part coffee shop, part salad bar, and part fast casual, with a setup straight out of the Venice Beach boardwalk, the vibe here is analogous to an urban watering hole. Groups from all walks gather to enjoy meatless burgers, creative salads and some of the best hot drinks that can only be described as ‘remedy bar magic.’ The diverse menu covers sandwiches to sushi, but comes together under the motif of fascinating ingredients. Vegan menus require substantial creativity, naturally [pun intended], but kelp noodles, Brazil nut cheese and pumpkinseed chorizo take things to another level. The burgers are a definite highlight, made with some mystical combination of sinless food from across the globe and served with excellent dried-not-fried house-made kale chips. Also count on anything with avocado—they serve it in heaps here. Hot drinks are an absolute must. The twelve tribes is like an elixir you’d find in a storybook, made with essentials like cinnamon oil and black pepper oil…and it is just amazing! Cold drinks are great as well, where you’d never think a vegan milkshake would be so thick and rich. And Wild Living Foods serves kombucha, obviously. So, if you’re going to be vegan for a day, or even just a meal, Wild Living Foods is your place to go without breaking the bank. The place still isn’t cheap by fast casual standards, and some of the portions can be a bit disappointing [the pizza!], but the care and attention that goes into every item, plus the sheer novelty of the crowd, is certainly worth a visit. Wild Living Foods is located at 760 S Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90014. Average out-the-door price for entrée, dessert and drink is ~$30/person.
